Advanced internet-based system improves security at new Gateshead College
Saturday 26 May 2007
Major benefits expected, including significant energy savings.
A new internet-based digital camera and access control system has been specified to improve security and safety for staff and students at a new £60 million campus being built for Gateshead College on Tyneside.
The system will be designed, installed and commissioned by Sunderland-based IT infrastructure specialists Advantex Network Solutions Ltd at the campus being built at Baltic Business Quarter on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne.
Main mechanical and electrical contractors for the project Balfour Kilpatrick awarded Advantex the six figure contract because of the company’s expertise and track record in delivering advanced internet-based digital systems for other educational facilities.
Similar systems have already been installed at City of Sunderland College, Oxclose School and Dyke House School in the North East, providing improved security and safety for staff and students.
The Gateshead College system will use the latest IP (internet protocol) digital cameras and access control technology to monitor and control the daily movement of thousands of students, staff and visitors around the 20 acre site.
Sixty-two IP cameras are being installed at key locations in and around the campus. Linked to easy-to-use keypad controlled door entry units, they will provide high definition digital images of everyone who enters and leaves the complex.
Both the camera and keypads will operate via a secure server linked to the College’s central IT network, enabling authorised personnel to control, monitor and review all entry and exit movements on PC workstations with internet access.
This will improve the level of security and provide significant cost savings as the College will need less traditional precautions such as expensive CCTV and security guards.
Also, because power is fed to the cameras and keypads via the network’s Ethernet cabling, it is estimated that Gateshead College will achieve energy savings of at least 20% when compared to traditional stand alone CCTV systems.
Another advantage is that the technology has the potential to be expanded in the future to monitor heating and lighting as part of a fully integrated building management system.
Dave, project engineer for Balfour Kilpatrick, said the specification for a robust, easy-to-use and cost effective system that will meet long term future needs.
“Advantex, with its proven track record in the sector, is at the forefront of IP-based technology in the North East of England and offered the expertise required to ensure the project is delivered on time and within budget.
“Its easy-to-use and robust solution will provide the highest possible level of security for the College while the use of flexible digital technology will deliver long term performance and cost saving benefits.”
Advantex, which designs, installs and commissions computer and telephone local area networks (LANs), was started in 2002 by brothers Stephen and David O’Connell.
The company employs 20 people at its site in Houghton-le-Spring near Sunderland and has a turnover of £1.6 million.
Stephen O’Connell said: “This is prestigious contract for us and demonstrates our ability to design and deliver innovative solutions to meet a customer’s existing and future needs.
“It also reflects our expertise in offering fully integrated turnkey solutions combining the very latest in camera, access control, switch and cabling technology.”
Installation work is expected to be completed by October 2007 and Advantex will also be providing post-installation maintenance and servicing.
