Advantex wins security tech solution for new carbon energy centre

A North East IT specialist has won a major contract with renewable energy company Vital Energi to deliver a new security and surveillance solution at AMP Clean Energy’s (AMP) new low carbon energy centre.

The Energy Centre, which is developed and operated by AMP Clean Energy, is supplying heat to Berwick’s Simpsons Malt’s Tweed Valley Maltings – the UK’s largest malting site – on a long-term agreement.

Working in partnership with renewable energy company Vital Energi, Gateshead-based Advantex has designed and supplied the integrated system, in the groundbreaking low carbon energy centre which houses cutting-edge electric and biomass boilers. The state-of-the-art system includes site-wide IP surveillance, with thermal imaging technology and real-time temperature monitoring, providing enhanced safety capabilities and security to the biomass storage areas.

Part of a five-figure investment, this innovative setup combines hardware from industry leaders Milestone, Axis, and Hikvision, creating a single, streamlined solution that allows AMP to monitor, manage, and maintain their entire site from one control room. With thermal cameras and automated temperature alerts, the system enhances safety by detecting heat fluctuations that could disrupt production or pose risks.

AMP has developed and funded the energy centre, operating it as an innovative facility that houses cutting-edge electric and biomass boilers, setting a new standard for malted barley production, a critical ingredient of the Scotch Whisky sector. The energy centre will not only reduce scope 1 emissions by a staggering 80% but also deliver a solution to grid constraints. The pioneering high-voltage electric boiler will be powered by wind energy that would otherwise be wasted during excess renewable energy generation.

Steve Dobby, Advantex’s account manager, commented on the ongoing partnership with Vital Energi, stating, “Having previously collaborated on a successful project with Vital Energi, we were delighted to partner with them again on this initiative for AMP, bringing our proven experience in delivering challenging solutions for complex projects. “

“This latest venture allowed us to leverage our expertise, implementing a tailored IP surveillance system that enhances site monitoring.”

Chris Hellon, Associate Design Director at Vital Energi highlighted Advantex’s adeptness at handling technically demanding projects, noting, “Advantex was our clear choice for this venture. They quickly understood the project’s unique requirements and designed a solution that meets today’s needs while accommodating future growth.”

This contract is the latest milestone for Advantex, which has seen rapid growth with a turnover reaching £12 million last year and a team of 70. The project adds to a series of recent successes, positioning Advantex as a go-to provider for high-tech security and surveillance solutions in the UK.
